Does Bupa cover CBT therapy?

Yes, Bupa often covers CBT as part of its mental health services. Most policies include a set number of outpatient therapy sessions, though you may need a GP referral first. Always confirm with Bupa directly as cover depends on your policy type. I am registered to provide Bupa therapy, you find my profile here https://www.finder.bupa.co.uk/Consultant/view/238148/rebecca_cox

Does AXA Health cover CBT therapy?

AXA Health typically includes mental health support for conditions such anxiety, depression, and stress. You may need prior approval, and some policies limit the number of funded sessions. We can work together to remain focused on your goals and make the progress which means something to you.

Can I use private health insurance for online CBT?

Yes. Many insurers now accept online CBT sessions as part of their outpatient cover, especially since the rise of remote therapy post COVID. Check if your provider requires your therapist to be accredited. Online therapy is equally as effective and somehting I have extensive experience in delivering. My NHS and Private Practice both included remote CBT sessions prior to COVID and I continue to offer this flexible and accessible option.

Does insurance cover CBT without a GP referral?

Some insurers let you self-refer to a CBT therapist, while others require a GP letter. Policies limits and arrangements differ significantly, therefore, it’s best to confirm your specific policy cover with your provider before booking and appointment. Once you have what you need, you can book an appointment with by emailing rebecca@rebeccacoxcbt.co.uk

What if my insurance doesn’t cover CBT?

If CBT isn’t included in your plan, or if your session limit is exceeded, you can still self-fund. Private CBT gives you more flexibility in session length, frequency, and choice of therapist.

Insurers recognise the impact of mental health on physical health and wellbeing and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely recommended talking therapies in the UK. It helps with a range of difficulties including, anxiety, depression, stress, panic, and sleep. CBT is an evidence-based and NICE-approved and many private medical insurance providers include CBT in their mental health benefits.

How to Use Insurance for CBT Therapy

  1. Check your policy – look under “mental health” or “outpatient cover.”

  2. Ask for a referral – some insurers require a GP referral, others will give you a pre authorisation number to use.

  3. Choose an approved therapist – your insurer may have a network, or you can ask them to approve your chosen CBT therapist.

  4. Book your sessions – once authorised, you can usually start therapy quickly.

Can I Self-Fund CBT Instead?

Yes. Many clients choose to self-fund to avoid paperwork, policy excess, waiting times, or limits on session numbers. Private therapy gives you flexibility and choice in how long you stay in therapy and who you work with.
